My sculptures are made from accumulated recycled objects
using serial methods of construction. The meaning lies in the transformation
of materials and subjects into something beyond themselves, something
new and strange to experience. When I see manufactured objects repeatedly
discarded, I begin collecting them, such as thousands of plastic six-pack
holders, hundreds of broken umbrellas, lost gloves and colorful plastic
bottle caps. I have no preconceived sculpture in mind when I gather
these objects rather the nature of the object suggests to me content
and form. Through investigating their meaning and experimenting with
their physical properties, structures often emerge which reference
those basic growth systems found in nature.
