Artist's Statement
The meandering line, so evident in this recent body of work, represents
an impulse towards rhythm and form arising from deeply felt instinct. Lately,
these drawing urges have found a resonance with certain forms that I have
observed in the world around me. On a recent trip to Mexico, I found myself
collecting pounds and pounds of the brain coral washed onto the beach each
day - its convoluting forms mimicing and echoing the ones I had been drawing.
These most recent drawings come most closely to developing a language that
is primarily based on this rhythmical “automatic” writing or
drawing. Layering creates transparencies and counterpoints of sound, movement,
and color. Allusion to maps -their radiant physical space and their ability
to hold and reveal multiple levels of information (including the non-visible) – also
plays a role in the structural organization of this newest work. As always,
my drawings are “found” - a result of taking a journey without
knowing exactly where I am going but filled with the confidence that drawing
has the poetry to take me there and that I will recognize my destination
when I get there.
