For over twenty-five years I have been utilizing gold
leaf in my work for its radiant, symbolic and timeless qualities. Since
1987, my Works on Paper have been concerned with centering, balance,
and the relationship of the individual parts to the whole, i.e.,
a synergy of elements, which has undoubtedly been influenced by my
studies with Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s in California.
A life-long interest in ancient cultures and non-European philosophies
has certainly affected my choice of color in the recent Construct
Series. Each color is derived from the polychroming of Egyptian
artifacts.
The new works are composed and constructed by using one of the numerical
systems that was developed by the 12th Century Italian monk Leonardo
Fibonacci. The mark-making of the ink on the gold leaf and
the oil pastel on the paper reflects a continuing interest in connecting
the ancient past with the present. |
