"Weaving and sewing, as examples of embodied
knowledge and as practices that reflect personal and social history,
especially as understood by women, have been aspects of Humphrey's
work or many years…."

Princenthal: Catalog Essay for Weaving Geographies
My recent project in a geographically remote part of southwestern
China to research the intricate and obsessive embroidered work
of the Miao women has influenced my work on both formal and conceptual
levels. I am interested in the many ways that form and meaning shift
when disparate cultures collide and in using both micro and macrocosmic
mapping as a structure from which to work from.
In recent works ,highly magnified locations in the brain believed
to contribute to both creativity and obsessive behavior are printed
on cloth, and selectively embroidered. allowing both the digital
and handmade qualities to be seen. These maps of obsession and creativity
are stretched onto a steel structure, which reads as being somewhere
between an embroidery hoop and a microscopic lens. Other works translate
the same body information onto paper with veils of collaged material, fabric
and vellum.
