When I was ten years old, my beloved grandmother told
me a Vietnamese proverb, “If you live in a long tube, be thin.
If you live in a barrel, be round.” Even though I was too young
to understand its implications at the time, I held them close to
my heart. I now understand it to be about one’s ability to
adapt to the given environment. As the direction of my work becomes
more dependent on given site-specific locations, the nature of my
response varies to each new space accordingly. In other words, the
challenge that lies in my interest has a lot to do with how I adapt
myself to the given environment spatially.
