My paintings have evolved over the years from being large minimalist
color statements to what I call large maximalist color statements. The
once subtle textures lying just below the surface have risen to the
top in distinct juxtapositions of color and pattern. My
references are multi-cultural, art historical and everyday. I
mix and match freely, being inspired by literally everything; from
a pattern in the street to a painting at the Met, from a flip book
at the Musée d’Orsay gift shop to a little souvenir
stuffed elephant from India. I also often reference my ongoing
collection of color photographs from the New York Times. My
work is simple. It takes an extraordinary amount of time and
patience to make, but ultimately, it’s very simple. It’s
about beauty. For me as an artist, it’s about making
something beautiful. Hopefully, every now and then I can accomplish
this.
